BankFuse was founded in Nairobi in 2018 by a team of bankers, engineers and financial inclusion advocates who believed East Africa deserved better than legacy banking software built for European markets. Today we power 500+ institutions across five countries.
In 2017, our founders — a mix of bankers from KCB and Equity, engineers from iHub and financial inclusion practitioners from CGAP — sat down to map the biggest obstacle to financial inclusion in East Africa.
The answer was clear: legacy banking software. The region's MFIs, SACCOs and community banks were running on systems built for European banks in the 1990s — systems that didn't speak M-Pesa, didn't understand CBK regulations, couldn't process UGX alongside USD, and required a team of engineers just to generate a monthly report.
BankFuse was built to fix that. We spent 18 months in the field — visiting MFIs in Kisumu, SACCOs in Kampala, agri-lenders in Mbeya and rural banks in Kigali — before writing a single line of code. The result is a platform that feels like it was made in East Africa, because it was.
"To give every financial institution in East Africa — from a 200-member village SACCO to a multi-branch commercial bank — the technology infrastructure to serve more customers, more efficiently, in full regulatory compliance."
"A fully financially included East African Community — where every person, every small business and every cooperative has access to the financial tools they need to thrive."
Every product decision is made with East Africa's unique financial landscape, payment infrastructure and regulatory environment as the starting point — not as an afterthought.
We measure our success by the success of the institutions we serve. Their growth, their compliance, their uptime — these are our metrics.
We are ISO 27001 certified, PCI DSS compliant and SOC 2 Type II audited. Financial data is sacred — we treat it that way.
We ship platform updates every two weeks. Our product roadmap is 70% driven by customer feedback from our institutions across the region.
